Joan Yvonne Stripling Johnson, of Nacogdoches, Texas, was born the daughter of Lillie (Billie) Pleasant Stripling and Marvin Warren Stripling. She was a lifelong resident of Nacogdoches and a graduate of Nacogdoches High School. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and had a great passion and love for teaching first and second graders. She taught for 33 years, with 28 years at Fredonia Elementary School. In high school, she met the love of her life, Jerry Kenneth Johnson. They married on August 19, 1955 and remained by each other’s side for 45 years until his passing on April 19, 2000. To this union, Ken and Carla were born. Mrs. Johnson was a member of numerous genealogical societies which promoted patriotism and the preservation of America’s heritage. She enjoyed being politically involved as the wife of a Texas Legislator; enjoyed attending plays at Lamp-Lite Theatre with her daughter, Carla; and was a member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church for over 60 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with Hometown Travelers of Huntington State Bank. Mrs. Johnson was a model of traditional values and social etiquette. She was the “hostess with the mostess” and greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word. As described by her daughter, Carla, she was the family’s “Yellow Rose of Texas” and the perfect example of a true Southern lady. Survivors include her son, J. Ken Johnson and wife, Melissa; daughter, Carla J. Redfield; four grandchildren: James E. Redfield, III, Cawren Yvonne Redfield, Andrew B. Johnson and Benjamin L. Johnson; sister, Lois Fitch and husband, James; sister-in-law, Maxine Stripling, and nieces, Dee Stripling and Angie McKinney. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry K. Johnson; parents, Billie and Marvin Stripling; brother, Billy Warren Stripling and nephew, Max Warren Stripling. A private family service will be held for Mrs. Johnson. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Edited - full obit may be obtained from Laird Funeral Home, Nacogdoches, Texas - March 20, 2020.
