Bio

M.D. Delbert Eugene Delbert E. Hughes, M.D., age 90, passed away on July 3rd, 2015 during a hospitalization with his children around him. Del was born in Pampa, Texas June 1st, 1925. He graduated from Pampa High in 1943 and joined the Navy Air Corps. After his service he attended Baylor University in Waco then chose a medical career and graduated from Baylor Medical School in Houston. It was during medical school he met and married fellow medical student Waunell McDonald in 1948. Immediately after internship he was drafted for the Korean War. While serving in the Army he received a Bronze Star for medical service in a Battalion Aid Station in Korea; he provided frontline medical treatment until the wounded could be transferred to a MASH unit. Del was discharged January 3rd, 1955 and settled in Tyler, Texas where he began a general practice with Waunell and her father, Dr. C.C. McDonald. He was active in medical organizations, Kiwanis, Civil Air Patrol, Christ Church Episcopal and loved civic theatre productions. In 1965 he moved to Dallas and completed a psychiatry residency. He enjoyed a long career as a psychiatrist at the Veterans Hospital in Dallas. During these years he enjoyed living in University Park and was active in many professional organizations. Del liked riding his motorcycle to work or on trips to Colorado. He loved hunting deer in the hill country with his brother John Hughes. Del especially loved the weekends at his lake house on Cedar Creek teaching grandchildren and their cousins to swim, fish, sail and windsurf. He often marveled at his good fortune to live by the lake, under a canopy of trees surrounded by so much water, as he grew up in the Texas Panhandle during the Dust Bowl and did not see rain until he was seven years old. Del was preceded in death by his wife Waunell McDonald Hughes. He is survived by his brother John A. Hughes, four children: Lark Hughes Waters, Mark Hughes, Lynn Kluth, and Mike Hughes, his grandchildren: Lauren Thielicke, Brian Hughes, Matthew Hughes, Robert and Gary Kluth, Andy and Doug Waters and great grandchildren: Marcus and Aurelia Thielicke and Garrison Kluth, Oliver and Finn Waters.
