Bio

ARTHUR, CHESTER PHILLIP Beckoned by Mirages Many a steak or roast on a pioneer table was supplied by C. P. Arthur, who came to Hereford in the summer of 1902 from Midlothian , Ellis County, Texas. The move was made for Mrs. Arthur's health on the advice of her doctor to seek a higher drier climate. The Arthurs had known the George Pierces, Will Ricketts, and Jim Boydstons in Ellis County; these families had moved to Hereford and had sent back favorable reports on the new country. Arthur came up to look the country over, bought 20 acres on land, and built a three-room house a mile and a quarter south-east of Hereford . Mrs. Nona Jowell, the former Nona Arthur, was 12 years old when she made the trip to the Plains with her parents in the summer of 1902. She has vivid memories of the trip in a covered wagon, complete with a chuck box on the back. A bed-spring and mattress had been included for the mother's comfort. "I shall never forget my first sight of the Plains," Mrs. Jowell recalls. "You could see so far. The green grass looked like a never-ending carpet canopied by the bluest of skies. Antelope were grazing beside the trail. And most fascinating of all were the mirages--like lakes in the distance and disappearing as we approached them." And prettiest of all to the little girl was the bright red house trimmed in white which her father had had built on his first trip to Hereford. She remembers the wind mill and well house, which provided storage for meat, milk and butter. Arthur, who had farmed before coming to Deaf Smith County, went immediately into the meat business. He bought and slaughtered animals and delivered the meat in his own delivery wagon. Later he operated meat markets in Hereford, at different times having as his partner a Mr. Dobbins, Henry Cloyd, and J. B. Elliston. He served as the first tax assessor after the move into the new court house in 1910. He learned the vicissitudes of the cattle business, making and losing money as a cattle buyer and shipper. He was a Woodman of the World, Odd Fellow, and an active member of the First Christian Church. Chester Phillip Arthur was born in Minden , La. , on September 30, 1850, he came to Texas as a boy and realized his dream of becoming a cow-puncher. In the late 1870's and early 1880's he drove cattle to Montana over the Chisolm Trail. He also worked on the Goodnight and Mill Iron Ranches. He was married to Mary Caroline Snider in August, 1888; one daughter, Nona was born to them on Oct. 3, 1889. Mrs. Arthur died at Hereford in 1912. Nona Arthur was married to Charlie W. Jowell in 1911. Born to them were Charles Arthur, 1912-1960; Mary Lynn (Mrs. Ace D.,) Hooper, Plainview; Anita (Mrs. R. K.) Gentry, Clovis, N.M., and Jerry Phillip, Waynoka, Okla. Charlie W. Jowell died in 1931. C. P. Arthur was married to his first wife's cousin, Mrs. Carrie Cooper, at Lockney in 1913. Born to them were Wilma (Mrs. Ralph W.) Webb, and Phylene (Mrs. Gene) Presley, Maricopa, Calif. Mrs. Carrie Cooper Arthur lives in Maricopa, Calif. (Source: A History of Deaf Smith County, by Bessie Patterson,1964;
