Pioneer Woman Dies Mrs. Wenona Arthur Jowell, who came to Deaf Smith County in a covered wagon when she was 12 years old, died Monday afternoon in Central Plains Regional Hospital at Plainview. She was 89. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Mack McCarter, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in West Park Cemetery under direction of Gililland-Watson Funeral Home. Born Oct. 3, 1889 in Midlothian, "Nona" Arthur came here in 1900 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Arthur, who operated several local meat markets and was the first tax assessor after the move to the new courthouse in 1910. She married Charley Jowell, another member of a pioneer family, in November 1911. He died in 1931. Mrs. Jowell was a longtime member of First Christian Church. She was a homemaker. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Lynn Hooper of Plainview and Mrs. Anita Gentry of Clovis, N.M.; a son, Jerry Jowell of Clovis; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
