James Lee Walker age 61, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 10, 2019, in Athens, Texas. He was born in Athens on March 20, 1958, to the late G.L. and Nova Lee Walker. James was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was loved by everyone that knew him, especially his dog, Dollie, that accompanied James on his hunting and fishing excursions. Being hearing impaired his entire life, that never deterred him from teaching young men and women in his life how to hunt, fish, and how to be a better person and how to love unconditionally. James was known to many as Poppa James. He was able to see and bring the best out of so many. He put a smile on everyones face. James loved and poured his heart into everything and everyone. Left to share in his memory is his loving wife of 24 years, Tonya Clary Walker, his children, Lacrista Groves and husband Chris of Rowlett, Jamie Rowe and husband Wayne of Seguin, Oakley Walker and Shalina Haynes of Athens, Briana Walker of Athens; a special nephew, Cody Killough that James always called “My Fat Boy”, Cody and his wife Sarah reside in Cross Roads; his grandchildren, David Groves and wife Bridgette of Waco, Aaron Groves of Athens, Walter Smalley and Faith Harris of Waco, Anjelica Groves of Waco, Sara Walker and T.J. Alder of Athens, Micah Moore of San Marcos, Preston Rowe of Seguin, Landon Rowe of Waxahachie, Da’Kari Young, Naomi Walker, Kace’Lyn Walker and Kelsey Walker all of Athens; his great-grandchildren, Gabriel Groves and Bryson Groves; his siblings, Jo Walker and husband Johnny of Palestine, Betty Arnold and husband Roger of Athens, Mary Thompson of Tyler, G.L. Walker Jr and wife Dottie of Athens, Robert Walker and wife Sheila of Athens; sister-in-law, Stacey Killough and husband Mike of Malakoff; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be James Anthony, Golan Dickerson, Luis Campos, Jeff Wallace, Jerry McCool, Jason Penix, Wayne Rowe, and Chris Groves. Honorary Pallbearers, Cameron Houston, Dancey McCool, Justin Killough, Robert Booker, Mike Killough, Jermaine Jackson, John Hudson, Lamonte Rodriguez and James’s grandsons. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 11:00 am at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home chapel; burial to follow at Becks Chapel Cemetery.
