Clayton Harris Ponder known by the nickname Coon was born July 8, 1857, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. The son of Levi Champion Ponder and Caroline Matilda Hodge. He moved to Hopkins County with his mother and stepfather sometime after the Civil War. On December 28, 1882, he married Sarah (Sallie) Cornelia Jennings (1866-1955) in Hopkins County, Texas. He died Sep 29, 1921, in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas
