Williamsport Grit (PA) Sun - 16 Jan 1927 p 26 TWICE REPORTED DEAD Unusual Experience in Civil War Career of the late John C Pennington Civil War veterans and others familiar with the field of Gettysburg are recounting some interesting rememberences concerning John Creveling Pennington whose obituary appears in another column. Mr Pennington was on the fighting line at the Battle of Gettysburg. He wore a cap, but preferred a hat. A comrad had a hat and they traded head dress. The comrad met death on the field. The cap he wore was clearly marked on the inside "John C Pennington" and as a consecquence Mr Pennington had the unusual experience, when he visited the Gettysburg field, to see his name carved on a memorial stone bearing a list of soldiers who had lost their lives in the battle. At another time he was a member of a detail that was conveyint prisoners to a boat, to be carried to another camp. When his detail arrived at point if embarkation it found the boat filled and neither detail nor prisoner went aboard. The boat was lost and all on it were drowned. But a premature announcement had been published that the Pennington detail was on the boat and again Mr Pennington was officially recorded to have lost his life in performance of military duty.
