Joe Kana is a graduate of Palacios High School, Class of 1966. He was born in and grew up in Palacios. After high school graduation, he attended Wharton County Junior College for two years and then transferred to Texas A&M University, graduating with a degree in Wildlife Science. He loved the outdoors and knew that is what he wanted to do as a career. His last semester in college, he married his high school sweetheart. Together they raised three children and have nine grandchildren. Mr. Kana came home to Palacios after graduation and accepted a job with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Coastal Fisheries Department where he worked from 1973 – 2003. His job consisted of collecting data to manage the bay systems. Mr. Kana has also been very involved in the Palacios community. He became involved in coaching little league baseball when his son was playing. He served on the Palacios Library Board for 12 years and helped to establish the Blessing Library. He also served on the City of Palacios 20-Year Planning Committee for Safe-To-School Routes to provide bike paths and sidewalks to connect all the schools. During that time, he worked on the completion of a safe pedestrian bridge that was built beside the East Bayshore Bridge. Mr. Kana is President of the Palacios Beautification and Pavilion Committee. During his time on the board, the committee has received grants to help with building the Palacios Education Pavilion. He currently serves on the Palacios Seawall Commission which maintains the seawall, fishing piers, and bulk headings on the shorelines to help prevent coastal erosion and has provided new playground equipment along the bayshore. In addition to his board service for these organizations, Mr. Kana has helped with the Pedal Palacios Bike Ride Committee, volunteers with the Palacios Chamber of Commerce, volunteered at the Robert Duran Food Pantry re- building ramps and unloading groceries, and helped with the distribution of groceries after Hurricane Harvey. Mr. Kana is a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church where he is a Eucharistic Minister, has taught CCD classes, served as Co-Chairman of the Building committee, and oversaw the remodeling of the Religious Education Center and remodeling of the church. Call all of this success or just getting involved with your community; it is all about life. He chose to get involved and to make a difference in our community. Mr. Kana is quoted as saying, "I have loved living in this small town of Palacios and watching it grow. Success is what you want it to be, whether rich or poor. You are our future. Make your future a success by getting involved." May 2020
