Florence Mary Blavet was born May 19, 1920 to Albert and Tess Prudhomme in Duluth, Minnesota. She was the oldest of three siblings, growing up with her two younger brothers, Clyde and Delbert. One of Florence's fondest memories of her childhood was her time in the Girl Scouts. In 1932, when Florence was twelve, she joined as one of the first two charter members of Troop 24. As a Girl Scout, Florence volunteered in her community and took a bus trip to the World's fair in Chicago. On May 14, 1937, Florence received the Golden Eaglet award for character and achievement. She was the first recipient of this award from the Duluth area and was one of twelve girls to meet the First Lady, Mrs. Herbert Hoover. This was the first of two prestigious awards Florence received, the other being the Faculty Award upon her graduation from Cathedral High School. Florence continued with the Girl Scouts until she was 19, when she started the next chapter of her life with Frank Blavet. Frank and Florence married on May 24, 1939. During their 66 years of marriage they had six children: Barbara, Mary, Thomas, Michelle, Mark and Glen. Frank was drafted into the Navy during WWII and it was during this time Florence joined the American Legion Auxiliary. Florence was a member of the American Legion branch in Duluth for eighteen years and served as unit president several times. In 1962, Florence and Frank packed up their family and headed to California to care for Frank's Uncle Tom and Aunt Olive in their elderly years. They eventually purchased their home in Wilmington where Florence joined the local American Legion branch and began volunteering at the Veterans Hospital in Long Beach. This was yet another example of Florence helping others. One of her most vivid memories was that of visiting the Old B-1 Unit where she helped four aviator polio patients in iron lungs play Bingo. Florence was brought to tears when the hospital presented her with a plaque commemorating her twenty-five years of volunteer service. In 1985, Frank and Florence relocated to Los Alamitos near their youngest daughter Michelle. They were actively involved at St. Joseph Catholic Church and in the seniors club where they made many special friends. Frank and Florence would often travel across the United States visiting family from one coast to the other. In addition to her six children, Florence had 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, all of who were blessed to have this wonderful woman as their Grandma. Florence had a knack for never forgetting a birthday or anniversary. In September of 2012 Florence moved to Nebraska to live in the convent with daughter Sister Mary Florence. As a devoted Catholic, this gave her the opportunity to attend mass daily which she loved. Florence Blavet died on September 23, 2013 at the age of 93. Florence lived a wonderful life, leaving a legacy of giving, friendship, and love that anyone would be proud of. She will be dearly missed but always in the hearts of her family and friends.
