Donald Gale "Speed" Burchett was born April 24, 1921, the second child of Homer Clifton Burchett and Edna Iona (Glazebrook) Burchett. He passed away October 17, 2008 at Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center in Osceola, Iowa at the age of 87. Gale was born in Decatur County, Iowa and raised in Decatur and Clarke counties. He played town team baseball for the Hopeville team and received the nickname "Speed" because of his ability. In 1947, Gale moved to California. He was united in marriage to Lillian Krul in South Gate, California on August 19, 1954. They lived in Paramount, Lake Isabella and Weldon, California. In 1994, they moved to Murray, Iowa to live near Gale's sisters, Madge and Agnes. Gale was a member of the carpenters union and worked installing wood floors. He enjoyed raising a garden, canning, baking cookies and caring for pets. Lillian and Gale enjoyed traveling and camping. Gale had made his home at the Osceola Nursing and Rehab since January of 2005. He enjoyed being with residents and staff members. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lil in 1999; his parents; sisters, Madge Strubhar and Agnes Gaumer; brother-in-law, Olin Strubhar; and nephew, Roger Gaumer.
