Bio

Monica Dianne Kirgan, 60, of Teague, Texas, passed away on August 10, 2019. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Monica was born on September 12, 1958, in Waxahachie, Texas, to the late Kenneth Gerald and Mollie Bennett (Robinson) Cockerham. She is the elder sister of Melissa Baxter. She loved her school and was a cheerleader for most of her high school career. She sat first chair sax in the band, won awards in District Journalism, made decent grades and never studied for a class or a band competition unless it was the night before, she hated to study, but she was brilliant. In January of 1976, she was making the drag in Teague and found a Fairfield boy who had wandered into forbidden territory. She told her Mom that night she had met her husband. She and Jeff had an immediate attraction that lasted for over 43 years, 38 of which they were married. She attended one year of Navarro College, worked a year in Waco at T-Shirts Plus, where the “city girls” helped her create her big hair look that ultimately led to her constant tardiness wherever she went. She then attended two years at Southwest Texas State University and was a Little Sister of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, where Jeff served as a Brother. In 1981 she became the bride of Jeff Kirgan and worked a few jobs until 1981 when the couple brought Matt Kirgan into this life. Matt brought joy into the lives of their family, but his congenital brain condition required Monica to be a stay at home Mom, where she devoted her entire life to his care. Monica loved music and paid a specific interest in who wrote the songs and held those people in high regard. This love of the musical arts led to a passion for music artists and soon to her favorite band. Monica’s life then revolved around Jeff, Matt, keeping her family strong, and a hard-core desire to watch and listen to the band, Whiskey Myers. For the last 8 years of her life, her entertainment revolved around where Whiskey Myers was playing a show. The entire band and crew always held a special place in her heart due to the true gentlemen they all were, and the amazing talent they possessed. They were like her kids. Monica was loved by everyone. She had a brilliant spirit and her life inspired everyone around her. She found her calling in giving care for others; not only to Matt, but also to her Mom and Dad, and several others who she helped in one way or another. She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Bette Ann Kirgan. She leaves behind her husband, Jeff; her son, Matt; sister, Melissa Baxter and her husband, Mark; brother, Russell Flandry, of Austin; father-in-law, Joe Lee Kirgan, Jr., of Fairfield; brother-in-law, Joe Lee Kirgan III and his wife, Susie, of Fairfield; sister-in-law, Kay Watkins and her husband, Jerry, of Corsicana; other relatives and many friends.
