Topeka Capital-Journal, Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, page 9C: Gladys Brooks Hess Gladys Brooks Hess, 86, Topeka, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at a Wheat Ridge, Colo., nursing home. Mrs. Hess had taught school in Meriden and Scranton and she was a member of the library staff at Topeka High School. She and her husband also owned and operated Hess Jewelers in downtown Topeka for 26 years. She was born May 13, 1909, at Burden, the daughter of Robert Osborne and Jessie Eddie Brooks. She was graduated from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia and she had lived in Topeka since 1947. Mrs. Hess was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist in Topeka, First Church of Christ Scientist of Boston, Helena Chapter No. 210 of the Order of Eastern Star and Chapter FJ of the PEO Sisterhood. She married Mervin W. Hess on Dec. 26, 1848, in Topeka. He died Nov. 9, 1977. Mrs. Hess was also preceded in death by a son, Richard "Dick" Hess, Topeka. No immediate family members survive. Mrs. Hess was cremated. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Burial of cremains at Mount Hope Cemetery will be private.
