Bio

The Afton Enterprise Afton, Iowa, July 21, 1892 Death of Auditor Wilson County Auditor John L. Wilson, whose death has been expected for some time, passed away, Saturday evening, at his home in Lincoln township. He has been ill for some time, but had continued in the discharge of his duties as long as he was able, finally taking to his bed from which he never rose. John L. Wilson was born in Ohio. Himself and father served in the Union army during the war. The father was killed and the son wounded no less than five times. It will be remembered, during his residence in Afton, that these old wounds troubled him a good deal. He was elected county auditor five years ago and re-elected three years ago, his term having been extended one year by legislative action. He was a faithful official and a kindly, pleasant man. Mr. Wilson was prominently identified with public interests in Union county and his death causes deep regret. His funeral was held at his residence in Lincoln township, on Monday morning, and was attended by many friends among them the county officials. The Afton Lodge, I.O.O.F., of which he had been a member made preparations to attend, but owing to the rain, were prevented from starting. Our entire community feel the utmost sorrow over this sad event, and the bereaved relatives have their earnest and heart-felt sympathy. -------------- John Lawrence Wilson was the son of Thomas Van Kirk Wilson 1812-1862 and Harriet Heinlein 1814-1892 who married 12 Mar 1833 in Guernsey Ohio. -------------- A ninth daughter, Alice Ann (Wilson) Clark 13 Jan 1880-19 May 1966 is believed to be buried in Bremerton, Washington. -------------- John Lawrence and Margaret Cartwright Wilson had another child not listed below: Wesley Todd Wilson 1 May 1870-29 Sep 1870 and Veteran of the Civil War: Corporal, Company A, 12th IL Infantry. Enlisted from Mechanicsburg. Served 1 Aug 1861 to 13 Jun 1862.
