Alvinia Burr, age 89 of Houston, entered quietly into eternal rest on March 13, 2019. She was born to Steven Zievert and Genevieve Kaminski in Washington on the Brazos, Texas, on the cold morning of November 6, 1929. (This little town is the birthplace of Texas, too.) Her childhood was greatly influenced by the Great Depression and World War II. Alvinia's favorite things to do were to cook and to eat. Her grandson Paul called her a "Foodie." She was an excellent cook and loved to go out to eat. Several years ago, Alvinia wrote this about her younger years, "I have one sister named Sara who was born in 1931. I had one brother named Isadore, who we called Sonny, and he was born in 1936. When I was seven, we moved to Houston to live with my grandparents. Once, my dad obtained a job and we got established, which was about two years later, my dad and grandfather built our NEW home at 903 E. 27th Street. I lived there until I got married. My siblings and I attended parochial school for eight years. Later we attended public schools. Since I was the oldest, I always had the responsibility of caring for my sister and brother. I felt like I was my brother's second mother. As a child and on into life I was always a serious-minded person and inclined to make myself very independent. I was a very good student. When growing up we did not have TV, DVD, CDs, cell phones; for entertainment we embroidered scarfs, towels, whatever we could stencil on to do our "masterpiece". Also, we played board games like Chinese Checkers and monopoly. My sister and I would jump rope till our sides ached. We just did what kids did in "those" days. After graduating in 1948 from John H. Reagan High School, I obtained a job with Hartford Insurance where I worked for seven years." She worked for Texaco for 11 years. She became a real estate broker and owned Braeswood Realty for many decades. She also became an insurance agent with Farmers Insurance, where she met her best friend of three decades, Benny Risner. Benny and Toby came to Alvinia's rescue during the three floods that devastated her home along Braes Bayou. Benny and Toby have been by her side the last several years of her life. Toby Risner served Alvinia with kindness, tenderness and love constantly the last several years. She lovingly referred to Toby as her grandson and he referred to her as grandma. Benny, Toby, and her beloved nephew Mark Machala were with her when she drew her last breath. She loved her local sports teams. She was an avid fan of the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets and Houston Texans. Never wanting to miss watching the game, while eating her popcorn and drinking a glass of wine. She lived a very full life filled with great memories of people she loved and cared about deeply. Always an animal lover, especially when it came to dogs, poodles to be exact and Daisy a longhaired Chihuahua. (Baby Girl) She was the only surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving her is her daughter Dana Grohman and husband Steve, and grandchild, Paul Grohman. She is also survived by Mark Machala, Denise Martelli, Tim Machala, Charles Machala, and Andrea Raush, children of her sister, Sara. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, W. W. Burr. The family would like to thank everyone for all of their prayers and support. Alvinia will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
