Mills County Tribune Monday, September 30, 1940 Mother of Maude Smith Delvan Dies in Omaha Mrs. Martha Pickerill Smith, 81, pioneer resident of southwest Iowa and mother of Maude Smith Delavan, author of "Rumelhearts of Rampler Avenue," died Thursday evening at her home in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Smith, widow of George M. Smith, pioneer contractor and builder, lived for fifty years in communities in the county, in Macedonia, Tabor, Red Oak and Malvern. She moved to Omaha in 1929. Surviving is her only daughter, Mrs. Nelson Delavan, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Max Wainwright, of Omaha, and a great grand son, Neil Wainwright. Funeral services were in Omaha, at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, and in Wheeler's Grove, east of Macedonia in the Christian church at 3 p.m., with burial being made in the cemetery there, Mrs. Smith was well known to many Mills county residents with whom she became acquainted during her years of residence at Malvern and Tabor. obit courtesy of Linda B (#47272982)
