Bio
Grand Island Daily Independent Monday 19 Jan 1885 On Tuesday Mr. Hy Schaaf died, and was buried Thursday. He was one of the first colony, that settled here in 1857 and stood all the hardships of pioneer life. together with Uncle Sass and Hy Egge he lived for years in a dugout at the present Egge farm. Afterwards he had a farm of his own about three miles east of town. He was always full of fun, a good companion, and hard working man. For some months he suffered with some disease of the stomach and finally died of inflammation of the lungs. He reached an age of over 58 years. His family has our heart felt sympathy as that of the whole community.
