Our beloved mother and grandmother, Betty Porter passed away peacefully on 19 January 2019 after a long battle with dementia. Mom was born in Columbus, Nebraska on 27 November 1925 to Fredrick and Erna Abegglen, the 5th of 6 children. She moved to Sunnyside, Washington while she was still in high school. While working at the Town House Café in Sunnyside, she met the love of her life, our father, Curt Porter. They were married on 8 June 1955. Soon after their marriage, our Grandmother Abegglen moved in and mom’s incredible gift of being a caregiver, mother, and wife blossomed. If forced to give a one-word description of her, selfless would be the choice. She always put the needs of her family and friends first and foremost, setting an example for all of us to follow. Growing up, our home was a welcome spot for relatives and friends. Summers were filled with visiting aunts, uncles, and cousins. Mom always made sure her guests were pampered and well fed. Coming from a long line of gifted seamstresses, mom made beautiful clothing for her children and grandchildren. Her jointed teddy bears will be treasured for generations to come. Working from home she upholstered countless pieces of furniture and car interiors. Her talent was appreciated by many. Once her “boys” were in high school, mom began working for the Granger School District as a library paraprofessional. After retirement, mom and dad enjoyed traveling, until his health failed. It was then her devotion as a caregiver began again. Together they moved to Yakima where they lived with their youngest son, Greg. She lovingly cared for our dad until his death in June of 2001. After dad’s passing, a new chapter in her life began. She filled her days volunteering at Ahtanum Valley Elementary, where she was lovingly known as “Grandma Porter.” Spending time with her grandchildren was the highlight of her life. Even at the ripe age of 85, she would get down on the floor to play with her precious babies. In her twilight years, mom enjoyed traveling and did so frequently. Trips to Vegas were exhausting for all of us, but not for her. No matter where we went, her energy and zest for life was top notch. “You can sleep when you are dead,” was her favorite quote if anyone wanted to call it a night before she was ready! That energy would follow her while in Europe. After walking all day, she refused to let her age slow her down. “We can walk, the exercise will do you good!” Watching this amazing woman, with her blue eyes sparkling as she took in the sights of Europe, the glory of the Redwoods, the majesty of the Pacific Coast, and the other beauty of God’s natural wonders will forever be in our memories. She is survived by her sons, Roger (Chris) Porter and Greg Porter; grandchildren, Reghan (Taylor) Denny, Tazer Stone, Brandon (Heather) Porter and Ian (Erin) Porter; great-grandchildren, Thane, Carson, Zeake Denny, Reagan and Brettlyn Porter and Matilda Porter. Other survivors include Kelly Shinkle, Kelly Porter, and Andy Huntington. Our family wishes to thank the staff of Garden Village Nursing Home for the loving care they gave to our mother. At her request there will be a private family service. A celebration of her life will be held later this summer. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Yakima Human Society or Ahtanum Valley Elementary PTA in care of Brookside Funeral Home (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936.
