James Pickett Abbie James Pickett, 88, a resident of Kinsey passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, January 17, 2019 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Josh Alderman officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and from 9:30 am prior to the service on Thursday. Mr. Pickett was born August 6, 1930 in Houston County and resided in Dothan most of his life. He was a 1950 graduate of Newton High School, served in US Army in Korea as an infantry squad leader and was awarded for actions performed during combat, retired from the Alabama National Guard, had a long career as a TV technician retiring from Sears, and residential rentals was his final career. He was a devoted husband, father, grand and great grandparent who enjoyed working, gardening, fishing, and sports. His love for Christ motivated his years of active membership in churches in the community where he taught Sunday School, sang in choirs, and served as a trustee. Survivors include his son, Kyn (Gail) Pickett; daughter, Katrina (Stephen) Messer; grandchildren: Tricia (Mark) Bryant, Abbie Lynn Pickett, Milley Pickett, Hannah (Brady) Siemens, Caleb (Rebecca) Messer, Jonathan (Christine) Messer, Micah (Jessica) Messer; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law; Geraldine Pickett, and Ann Chapman Pickett Roney. Preceding Mr. Pickett in death is his wife of 64 years Angelyn Pickett (11/12/18); his parents: John and Allie Pickett, sisters and brothers-in-law: Bessie Pickett, Ethel (Ralph) Lee, Jewell (Lewis) Glover, Mary (Roy) Lee, Myrtle (Marvin) Haisten, Ruth (Elton) Klapal; brothers and sister-in-law: John Oree Pickett, Tommy Pickett, Wilson Pickett, Johnny Pickett, and Odell (Lois) Pickett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Freewill Baptist Church of Dothan or Wiregrass Hope Group. Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home, (334) 983-6604, is in charge of arrangements.
