Maxine was born on Sept. 18, 1933, the daughter of Lloyd and Elva (Raish) Goehring, in Loup County at the family home. Maxine graduated from rural Taylor High School in Loup County. On Nov. 3, 1950, she married Henry “Hank” Polak. They made their home in Loup County, Ord and Taylor in the early years of their marriage. In 1956 they settled in Council Bluffs, Iowa, until making Grand Island the family’s home in 1972. In her very early years of employment Maxine taught school at the West End country school house in which she had attended elementary school. After moving to Council Bluffs, she worked as a bookkeeper at retail stores in Omaha and then in Grand Island. She worked at the Madison County Courthouse and then was employed by the treasurer’s office of Hall County until she retired. During early retirement, with their camper in tow, Maxine and Hank enjoyed camping and wintering in Arizona. They both had a passion for playing the slot machines and did enjoy making trips now and then to the casinos. Maxine enjoyed challenging her mind and continued to read, watch her favorite game shows, “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune,” and challenge the computer while playing video Scrabble and Solitaire. Maxine was very knowledgeable on several subjects and enjoyed testing herself while watching “Jeopardy” and answering trivia questions. Maxine is survived by her children, Kathy (Tim) Gentile of Papillion, Gale Polak of Grand Island, Marilyn (Joe) Ray of Madison, and Darla (Harry) Hansen of Grand Island; grandchildren, Stephanie (Rich) Scott, Nick Gentile, Toni (Rudy) Mettler Sr. and Joey (Beth) Ray; and nine great-grandchildren; along with numerous extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hank, in 2015; parents, Lloyd and Elva Goehring; a sister, Colleen Switzer; two infant grandsons; and her beloved four-legged companion, Rosie.
