CLARKSON — Richard Holoubek, 1917 - 2011. Richard Holoubek, 93, of Clarkson, passed peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2011 – one month and five days and at the same hour after his spouse, Lucille. Visitation will be at 4-7 p.m. Thursday, with a vigil service following at 7 p.m., at the SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson, 120 Cherry Street. Burial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with Father Tim Forget and Father Bill Holoubek officiating. Burial follows at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Cemetery at the Wilson Church. Richard Holoubek, the eldest son of William and Frances (Pinker) Holoubek, was born Dec. 22, 1917, in rural Colfax County. Raised on a farm near Howells, he passed 8th grade exams to enter Clarkson High School at age 12. Richard graduated at 16 and entered the workforce in the depression era of 1934. A good athlete, he played farm league baseball with the Happy Nine. As a Sokol gymnast, he attended the national meet in San Antonio, Texas in 1936. Richard married Lucille Jedlicka on June 17, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler. After briefly living north of Howells, a farm was purchased in the Wilson Community. On this farm they would raise five children and live for nearly 70 years. To his grandchildren's delight, Richard told tales of a summer riding rail cars to find work in drought ridden 1936. Finding jobs gleaning beets and potatoes, he developed his strong work ethic and olympic endurance. Richard was a staunch advocate of the National Farmers Organization, fighting for farmer's parity and collective bargaining. His "great depression" experience always put him on the side of the working man. He was a past President of Wilson Lodge of Catholic Workman, and a member SS Cyril & Methodius Holy Name Society. He was a successful farmer but also pursued his interest in sales and service. Earning extra income with his business, Dick's Service, he operated as a farm dealer for tires, Archer Oil, seed corn and small farm equipment. Always the traveler, Richard took Lucille and his family on summer vacations to far off places. In retirement, they enjoyed trips to Europe and visits from children and grandchildren Richard never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was a giant and a pioneer. Lucille preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 2011. Richard is survived by five children, son, Verne (Terri) Holoubek, of Hartford, Wis., daughter, Virginia Holoubek of Omaha, daughter, Victoria (Randy) Brabec, of Clarkson, son, Rollie (DyAnne) Holoubek, of Adel, Iowa, daughter, Roxanne (Brad) Anderson, of Omaha; eleven grandchildren, granddaughter, Courtney (John) Goldbach of Rubicon, Wis., grandson, Todd Holoubek, of New York City, granddaughter, Sara (Claudio Marcarenhas) Holoubek, of New York City, grandson, Brian (Natalie) Holoubek, of Milwaukee, Wis., grandson, Ben Brabec, of Denver, Colo., grandson, Brady (Anne) Brabec, of Milwaukee, Wis., granddaughter, Elizabeth Holoubek, of Iowa City, Iowa, grandson, Simon Holoubek, of Iowa City, Iowa, grandson, Scott Anderson, of Lincoln, granddaughter, Caroline Anderson, of Lincoln, granddaughter, Jillian Anderson, of Lincoln; and five great-grandchildren, Hannah Goldbach of Rubicon, Wis., Collin Goldbach, Sam Goldbach, Walker Holoubek, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Scarlet Holoubek; sister, Wilma Kalisek; brother-in-law, Rynold Kalisek; brother, William Holoubek; and sister-in-law, LaVerna Jedlicka.
