Bio

SOURCE: Betty Jo Moeller bjmolr@aol Melvin Lee I. (1994): "My first knowledge of my grandfather, John Young Lee, was that he came from Birmingham, Alabama. He was supposed to have 9 brothers. He was married once before. He had a daughter named Neely by his first wife. He was full blood Irish and Grandma was full blood Cherokee Indian. It is not known where she was born or her maiden name. Grandma was also married once before to a man named Farmer. They had two children, Lena and Lorindy. John went to Converse, Louisiana from Birmingham where he met Texanna (Grandma). It is not known what year but they lived on a farm and operated a Ferry boat that transported people and goods across the Sabine River. Texanna was a professional trapper and won many awards for the number and quality of furs she had to sell ********************** Delores Mahfouz (Dec 1995): "John and Texanna ran Mike's Ferry across the Sabine River, 6 miles out of Converse, Louisiana. He was a Tobacco Farmer and a humerous man. John and Anna lived on the William Franklin "Frank" Latham place, about 1 1/2 miles from the river. They lived there for about 30 years. The place consisted of a two room house with a shed on the property. A source, Mr. Boyd grandson of Frank Latham, said the cabin was left standing and when the lake, Toledo Bend Resevoir, filled, the cabin went under the water. Mr. Boyd also stated the Babe Watkins may have been John's sister. " ****************************** Sammy J. Lee (1995) The lake you talk about is Toledo Bend Resevoir. I remember when Iwas about 19, the Lee family took a vacation down there. Aunt Golee, (Pa Pa's sister) had a son that ran a Marina down there. It was called English Marina. Dad still talks to Doyle & Proby English from time to time. I remember when we were there at the lake and I was out in the boat with Pa Pa, how he would navigate down the tree lines and go any where he wanted on the lake because he remembered the layout of the land before it was covered with water. He grew up in that Sabine River bottom and I would have given anything to know what was going through his mind as he navigated around that lake. John's Certificate of Death states he was born in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. Cassell Cemetery is located about 9 1/2 miles SW of Converse, Louisiana. After about 5 miles W on Louisiana Route #174, turn left and go 4 1/2 miles. Inscription: Our Father John Y.
