Bio
Shirley Fay Reed Nielsen, age 89, passed away in Riverton on October 12, 2018. She was born in Lehi on October 16, 1928 to A. James and Thelma Jones Reed. Shirley was raised in Lark and graduated from Bingham High School in 1946. Following graduation, she attended LDS Business College. She married Ramon William (Ray) Nielsen on September 7, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He passed away in 2010. Her life was one of hard work and service, raising seven children while emphasizing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through word and example. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of positions within all the auxiliary organizations. Shirley and Ray had the opportunity to live in Utah, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California as they raised their children. On multiple occasions, Shirley expressed appreciation for all the good people she met in her travels. She served with her husband in the Puerto Rico, San Juan; Utah, Cove Fort; and Spain, Malaga missions. During the last several years of her life, Shirley was an avid indexer with the Family Search Program, indexing over 100,000 names. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; parents; a grandson, Craig James Giles; a great-granddaughter, Cora Lynn McInnes; a great-grandson, Corbin Russell Key; brother, Douglas Reed; and sister, Donna Ault. Survivors include her children, Reed (Donna) Nielsen, Les (Carol) Nielsen, Steven (Sonia) Nielsen, Patti (David) Field, Nancy (Chris) Key, Lauri (Dennis) McDonald, and Heidi Nielsen; sister, Sonja Larson; thirty-four grandchildren; and 103 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the Meadows Ward Building, 12459 South Dansie Way (1855 West), Riverton. Friends and family may call prior to the services at the church from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, Sandy. Published by Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary.
