Uncle Alex Roberson Buried at Oakwood James Alexander (Uncle Alex) Roberson, 86, a citizen of Comanche County for 65 years and a man who is believed to have supplied more families in Comanche with fresh vegetables than any other person, was found dead in his bed when members of the family awakened Monday morning. He had been feeling as well as usual when he retired Sunday night and it is believed that the end came peacefully. Funeral services were held at the Oakwood Cemetery Tuesday afternoon with Rev Bob Smallwood of Stephenville officiating. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Cyril Roberson, Orville Roberson, and Veston McDonald of Comanche, Lester McDonald of Gorman, Doyle Roberson of Breckenridge, Andred {sic} Isham of Coleman, Andrew Roberson and Eldridge Carr of Granbury. Honorary pallbearers were Grady McDonald, Wagner Roberson, J.N. and Elmer Isham, all of Comanche. Flower girls were Eva Lee Roberson, Grace Isham, Marlyn {sic} Clarke, Naomi Ruth McDonald, Emma Louse {sic} McDonald, Mrs. Lemuel Griffith and Mrs. Oran Clark all of Comanche, Mrs. Arlie Williams and Mrs. Howard Mehaffey of Breckenridge. Mr. Roberson was born in Alabama November 28, 1849, being the son of James and Mary Wheeler Roberson. He grew to manhood in that state and was married in 1870 to Miss Bertha Johnson, who died the next year leaving a son, John Roberson who now resides near Comanche. In 1871 Mr. Roberson came to Texas and settled on a farm about two miles East of Comanche in what is now known as the Robersonville community on the Fort Worth road. He specialized in truck farming and for more than fifty years sold vegetables in Comanche. He was still living on that farm at the time of his death. In 1874, Mr. Roberson was married to Miss Viola Lane, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Lane. They were companions for sixty years, she having died in May, 1934. To this union, seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy and the following survive: Dan and Andrew Roberson, Mrs. D. Isham, Mrs. Sherwood McDonald of Comanche and Mrs. J. H. Carr of Conroe. A brother, Carl Roberson, lives in Callahan County. In the fall of 1873, Uncle Alex joined the Texas Rangers under the leadership of Captain Jack Wright and served until the spring of 1873. He took part in several Indian fights and did his part for the development of the county. Mr. Roberson was converted at the age of 26 in 1876 and joined the Missionary Baptist Church at Van Dyke, later moving his membership to Comanche. He still later became a member of the Robersonville Church in which he took an active interest and remained a member until his death. Application based on service in Lieutenant J.A. Wright,s Comanche County Company from May 25, 1872, to October 1, 1872, and in Lieutenant W.C. Watkins' Comanche County Company from September 19, 1873, to April 30, 1874. Application rejected. Indications are that Roberson alleged that he rendered some service as Alex Roberson. A notation in the file indicates the application was rejected because "the above name does not appear on the rolls."
