Bio

NEWS FROM LAVACA COUNTY Last Monday evening about 8 o'clock Mr. Jim Berry Hollan's residence was lit up in fine style, and many a bright eye and cheerful heart was there to enjoy the sociabilities and hospitalities as well as the solemnities of the occasion. It was the 31st of August, and just such an occasion as every family is proud to realize and is proud to have their friends around them to realize, at least semi occasionally. It was a wedding, a big, old fashioned wedding, with plenty to eat and plenty to enjoy it, with everybody in a good humor. It was the marriage of Mr. Ben. Thrift to Miss Lillie Hollan, the eldest daughter of Brother Sam Hollan. The Victoria Advocate (Victoria, Texas), September 19, 1885 Paul Boethel writes in A History of Lavaca County : "In 1887, it was a trading post for a considerable territory; it had two general merchandise store s, R. B. Thrift & Co ., and keepers & Brocker. Also a steam mill and gin operated by D. C. Cook; a drug store operated by W. H. Kilgore with Dr. Thomas Presley, Jr., as physician. A school known as the Peoples' School was conducted there with J. N. McCain as principal, and it was well known for its extensive course of study."
