Bio

John McDougall Kern 11/28/1946 - 2/28/2011 An exceptional trial lawyer, rosarian, furniture maker and connoisseur of Bombay Gin, John McDougall Kern lived life with a sparkle in his eye. Above all he loved his wife Susan and his children Matthew and Jennifer. Born in Omaha Nebraska on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1946, John was the first-born child of Agnes Rose Brink and Conrad Lee Kern. He grew up in a rambunctious Irish Catholic household with his sister Katie and brothers Michael, Jim and Terry. John entered the Jesuit Novitiate for two years in St. Bonifacious, Minnesota before leaving and earning his bachelors at Creighton University in 1970. He moved to Washington D.C. to earn his juris doctorate at the National Law Center, George Washington University in 1973. John met his wife Susan in Washington D.C. They married on their best friend's farm, later moving to San Francisco, where Matthew and Jennifer were born and raised. During 30 years of practice, John tried more than 200 jury cases to verdict. He was a former Assistant United States Attorney, serving as a federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia and representing the United States in civil actions in the North District of California. He was a partner at Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May, and was among the pre-eminent medical negligence defense attorneys in the Bay Area. John was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates and a founding member of the Lawyer's Club of San Francisco American Inn of Court. John enjoyed mentoring young lawyers, and volunteered often to teach with the National Institute for Trail Advocacy and others. There will be a private celebration of John's life. Those wishing to make donations in John's memory may do so to Sutter AIM/ Sutter VNA hospice. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Christopher Brown, Angelika Grazutis and Paulina Baulio for exceptional care and support, as well as his dearest friend Albert Norris.
