Bio
Nerena Janette Thomas was born on January 31, 1940, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as the first child of J T and Naomi (Yeaman) Thomas. She passed from this life on September 28, 1990, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Nerena grew up in Oklahoma City, and after graduating from Capitol Hill High School in 1958, she attended the University of Oklahoma majoring in language arts education. Early in her time at OU she met James Parnell of Hugo, OK, and they were married on July 3, 1960. They both continued their educations, and upon graduation they obtained jobs with the public school system in Denver, Colorado. Ten years and two daughters later, James took a teaching position at Colorado State University, so the family moved to Ft. Collins, and settled in to life in a university town. Nerena continued teaching for a few years, but eventually she began working at CSU, first as a secretary in the social work department, and then as an executive secretary in the university president's office. Nerena was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice, and she involved herself in as many musical endeavors as possible , starting with school choirs while she was still in elementary school clear through church choirs in every congregation of which she was a member. Add in numerous solos, small groups, and a couple of appearances in the chorus with the Fort Collins light opera company, and it's easy to tell that Nerena was always ready to sing! She was preceded in death by her parents J T and Naomi (Yeaman) Thomas, and also by a stepmother, Dorothy (Friend) Thomas. She is survived by her husband James Parnell of the home, two daughters, Jana Parnell of Aurora, and Erin Parnell, currently of College Park, Maryland, and her in-laws, Robert and Hazel Parnell of Hugo. Oklahoma. In addition she leaves her brother Mark Thomas and his family of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and her sister Sue Murray and her family of Oklahoma City.
