In Memory THELMA HARRIS McCOWN 1918-2009 Thelma Harris McCown Services for Mrs. McCown will be 11 AM Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at Partlow Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Hesson officiating. Interment will be in Wilson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 2-7 PM Monday and Tuesday from 10 AM until the service. Mrs. McCown, of Lebanon died Thursday, September 3, 2009 at University Medical Center. She was born in Cainsville where as a young child she helped run her father's general store. Upon graduating from college she began her teaching career at Lascassas School, the next year at Mt. Juliet Elementary. She left and took a job in New York City with Sterile-Seat Corporation. During the outbreak of WW II she was recruited and worked throughout the war at the Australian Mission in Washington, D. C. procuring airplane parts for the war effort. In 1946 she returned home and returned to teaching. In 1955 she received her Master's Degree from M. T. S. U. and became the State of Tennessee's first special education teacher. In the 1960s she taught third grade at McClain School where she stayed until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of Lebanon First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by parents, Jesse and Vadie Kellow Harris; husband, Fitzhugh McCown; brothers, Evon and Cordell Harris; sister, Jessi Mae Harris; cousin, Joyce Sidwell; and nephew, Ray Harris. Survivors include: son, Dr. Larry McCown; nephew, James (Carolyn) Harris; niece, Brownie Sue (Donald Ray) Alexander; and numerous cousines. Family will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be staff and residents of Elmcroft and Retired Teachers of Wilson County. Partlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
