Bio

Inman, SC - - Dr. Fred Holmes Jr., 97, formerly of 320 Wittenburg Way, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at National Healthcare Greenville. Born in Altamont, KS, he was the husband of Nema Kathryn Ferrier Holmes and the son of the late Fred Holmes and Avery Belle Atkinson Holmes. Mr. Holmes was an Army Air Corp Pilot and World War II Veteran. He was a recipient of the Air Medal with a Four Oak Leaf Cluster and The Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of Cleveland Park Bible Church. Dr. Holmes, a Bob Jones University graduate, served 37 years as a foreign missionary in Uruguay, South America and Oaxaca Mexico under Independent Bible Baptist Missions. He was a church planter and founded a bible seminary. Dr. Holmes authored the book, Under His Wings, detailing his 32 bombing missions in WWII. Surviving are six sons, Fred Holmes III of Concordia, KS, John Lance Holmes and wife, Sylvia of Travelers Rest, Hal Holmes and wife, Ellen of Inman, Jon Holmes and wife, Liz of Anderson, Tim Holmes and wife, Margi of Spartanburg and David Holmes and wife, Pam of Daingerfield, TX; a daughter, Rebecca Basham and husband, Richard of Greer; a brother, Arch Holmes and wife, Ute of Bridgeport, CT; a sister, Patricia Crawford of Hutchinson, KS; eighteen grandchildren; and forty great-grandchildren. Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Holmes and Dean Holmes; three sisters, Wintress Ross, Glenna Fischer and Wanda Raines; and a daughter-in-law, June Holmes. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Cleveland Park Bible Church in Spartanburg. Funeral services will immediately follow at the Church with Reverend Ken Casillas officiating. Interment will be in Shiloh Memorial Cemetery in Inman. After the interment, the family would like to extend an invitation for everyone to join them for dinner at Starry Nights, 8 South Main Street, Inman. The family will be at their respective homes.
