Bio

Charles A. Stepanek, 88 years, of Fremont, NE died Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Charles was born February 17, 1930 in Howells, NE to Charles S. and Bessie (Hartl) Stepanek. He was the oldest of nine children raised on a farm near Howells. The family moved to Schuyler when he was 14 years old. He graduated in 1950 from Schuyler High School and enlisted to serve his country in the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953. The Marine Motto, Semper Fidelis, (always Faithful) represented his life on the job, in his marriage, and with his children. He enjoyed astronomy, building a telescope and purchasing others. He enjoyed playing a button accordion since he was a teenager. He played for various groups and entertained for several organizations and in Homes for the retired. Charles married Delphine Sedlacek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Schuyler on October 20, 1956 and moved to New Ulm, MN where they lived for 12 years. They moved to Fremont in 1967. He worked at ConAgra until retirement in 1992. In 1979 they moved to Saunders County and built a new home on a 5 acre plot where he started an orchard. The family moved back to Fremont in 1998 and he continued raising fruit and gardening. He had great success raising peaches from seed. He enjoyed playing Double Deck Pinochle, Taroks and Pitch at the Friendship Center. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #158 of Cedar Bluffs, and AFL-CIO Grain Millers Union. He is survived by his wife, Delphine of 61 years; children, Roxanne Merizalde of Cedar Park, TX, Chuck(Leigh)Stepanek of Lincoln, NE, Russell Stepanek of Fremont, Laurie Stepanek of Lincoln, Angie(Braulio)Araya of Omaha; brother, Orin(Marcia)Stepanek of Columbus, NE; sisters, Laquita Sklenar of Pocatello, ID, Marcella(Louis)Husak of Columbus, NE and Carol(Delvin)Goff of Wamsutter Wyoming; and grandchildren, Ana Merizalde, Grant and Christopher Stepanek, Braulio, Alex, Victor and Sergio Araya. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Andrew Stepanek; one brother, three sisters and a granddaughter. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 2, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. The Rev. Father Walter Nolte and Fr. Mark Nolte will officiate. Visitation will be 6 PM to 8 PM with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.
