Bio

Leonard Paul Pickhinke, the son of Frank and Otilda (Dostal) Pickhinke, was born at Howells, Nebraska on June 29, 1929. He was baptized and celebrated the Sacrament of First Communion at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Howells. In January of 1940, he moved with his family to their farm west of Early. He received his education and was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Catholic School. On June 5, 1956, Leonard was united in marriage to Bernadine Bruch at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at Mt. Carmel. This couple was blessed with seven children: Gary, Ronald, Ann, Lynn, Daniel, Kevin, and Neil. Following their marriage, Leonard and Bernadine farmed north of Early, moving to their current farm in 1970. Leonard’s entire lifetime was devoted to his farming vocation where he also raised cattle in addition to his crops. Leonard passed along his love of farming to his sons and was privileged to help each of them get started in their farming operations. Leonard retired in 2008. He enjoyed fishing, giving rides to his grandchildren on the “gator”, and dancing to polka music. He will be remembered as a man who was always ready to help in a time of need. Leonard was a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, where he had served as a Eucharistic minister, an usher, and was on the school board. Leonard’s family held a very special place in his heart and he cherished the time he could spend with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He passed his love of the Rosary onto them. Leonard’s life will always be honored and celebrated by his family which include his wife: Bernadine of Nemaha; his children: Gary (Karla) Pickhinke of Storm Lake; Ronald (Bonnie) Pickhinke of Sac City; Ann (Tim) Mohr of Early; Lynn (Denise) Pickhinke of Nemaha; Daniel Pickhinke of Fonda; Kevin Pickhinke (special friend, Marci Lago) of Storm Lake; and Neil (Kay) Pickhinke of Early; his grandchildren: Andrew (Paige) Pickhinke, Kelsey Pickhinke; Jessica (Jeff) Rench, Kayla (Andy) Pudenz, Jason and Kristin Pickhinke; Abigail, Michael, and Emily Mohr; Jon, Beth and Katie Pickhinke; Brady and Kendra Pickhinke; step-grandchildren: Michelle (Shane) Schreck and Michael McKenna; great-grandchildren: Easton Rench and Addison Pudenz; step-great-grandchildren: Kylee and Melodee Rench and Brayden, Bella, and Lincoln Schreck; his brothers: David Pickhinke of Storm Lake; Don (Marilyn) Pickhinke of Schaller; Ervin (Shirley) Pickhinke of Sioux City; and Eugene (Eileen) Pickhinke of Early; his sister: Alice Pudenz of Odebolt; brothers-in-law: Rev.
