Bio
When the organization of the Zion Lutheran Church occurred on September 29, 1878, the first marriage and baptism were also celebrated. A pastor arrived from Ellinwood to officiate the wedding and baptism. Israel and Bertha Gildner recited their wedding vows at her parents' home. Peter Jacob Heiland received the sacrament of baptism. Gustav Adolph Israel was born in Germany in 1852 to F.M. and Johanna Israel. The family came to Ford County in 1868. In 1861, Bertha Marie Gildner was born in Germany. The couple raised five children. In 1885, the Israel family moved to northeastern Kansas. After fighting pneumonia for a week, Bertha passed away in 1895. Gustave moved to California to live with their daughter, where he died in 1924. Bertha, Gustave, and four of their children were laid to rest in Burlingame City Cemetery.
