Per birth certificate, born Robert Leland RUSH to Eleanor (nee Whitely [sic]) and James Rush. Raised by his maternal grandparents Rebecca and Benjamin Whiteley and always used their surname. At time of death he was Baker 3d Class aboard the USS Lexington, which was sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea. His name is listed on a cenotaph at the Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
