BURWELL — Maureen Ann Sartain, 59, of Burwell died March 10, 2018, at the Valley County Health Systems Hospital in Ord. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell. Burial will be in Geranium Cemetery west of Ord. Father John Kakkuzhiyil will officiate. On May 23, 1958, a girl was born to Richard and Emily (Weverka) Kelley, in Sargent. She was named Maureen Ann. She graduated from Sargent Public High School in 1976. Maureen loved the stock car races that occurred in her hometown. A recognizable moment for her was when she personally raced and became the Powder Puff Queen while her dad was the corner flagman. During high school she worked at the Dairy Sweet. Upon graduation, she started working as a secretary for the Mid-States Co-Op in the fertilizer department. She didn’t blend the fertilizer, but the manager soon discovered she could shift a truck and her duties exploded. When the ag economy tanked, she loaded up her car with all that could be tied down and headed east, reuniting with relatives and long-time friends of the family. When she found her apartment, her dad’s sleeper compartment was full of furniture on his next trip to the Omaha Stockyards. It only took Maureen three days before she was a working girl again. She chose to hone her skills from the experience of senior secretaries instead of going to college. She said, “Sometimes the best education is your own experience, grasping a little knowledge in everything along the way.” She was a member of the Omaha Sports Club League for more than 10 years, a team member who helped develop the Sears Discover Card and enjoyed the urban lifestyle of fine arts attending operas and plays. Maureen moved back to Burwell where she married David Sartain on Sept. 21, 1996. Soon after Maureen gave birth to Emily Marie Sartain on Oct. 20, 1997. Maureen enjoyed being a mom so much she decided to trade in her heels for irrigation boots to raise her daughter. She and David became co-operators in their family ag business. Maureen fell in love with harvesting the land. She became passionate about attending farm conferences to constantly grasp ways to incorporate new ideas and technology. Maureen spent the last part of her life enjoying traveling, including trips to the Napa Valley, Florida, Montana, Nevada and Texas. When she wasn’t seeing new sites or working in the fields, she enjoyed sewing, painting, working on her flower garden, growing her plants, Husker volleyball, Nebraska football, NASCAR and creating signs for the community — especially the ones found at the Garfield County fairgrounds in Burwell, each letter hand painted on a rickety ladder by yours truly. She is survived by her husband, David, and daughter, Emily, of Burwell; her mother, Emily Kelley of Sargent; five siblings and their spouses, Dick and Shirley Kelley of Broken Bow, Martin Kelley of Elm Creek, Sharon and Ed Sherbeck of Taylor, Annette and Tim Sierks of Brewster and Marilyn and Todd Grant of Ansley; 12 nephews, four nieces and a combined total of 40 great-nephews and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Kelley; and a nephew, Russell Kelley.
