She was baptized in John Black United Church of Canada. Cathy and her first husband Earl were divorced January 1969 in Harris County, Texas. Cathy's first and second husbands, Earl and Art, ironically, died on the same day (May 26) a few years apart. Art and Cathy met when her son John was Art's orthodonture patient. During much of her marriage to second husband Art Carlsen, Cathy was not church-connected because of Art's resistance. Art was a self-proclaimed atheist. In the later years of their marriage Art relented, not becoming a believer, but willing to let Cathy go to church. She then became very active at the Presbyterian Church in Ord, Nebraska. She became one of the church's officers, and one of its organists. Cathy became a United States citizen on July 4, 2002. Her third marriage was less than wonderful. That husband provided well, but neighbors said he held her a bit too captive; was demanding and authoritative. He may have felt that he was protecting her as she slipped into dimentia, but neighbors and friends in Ord, Nebraska, where they lived, thought he was too restrictive. When some relatives tried to phone her he would not let them talk to her. On the other hand, Cathy's son by Earl reported in 2022 that Duwane was very nice to him and his sister, treating them well. Eventually, her daughter in Colorado did a good thing; she took her mother to Colorado to be cared for. Cathy had a loving nature; she had a great spirit for care-giving. She took excellent care to her second husband Art during his long illness leading to death, even though he could be difficult and crabby. She often gave tending care to other people in Ord, Nebraska when they had no one else to care for them.
