Eugenia "Jean" Katherine Johnson March 29, 1933 - January 25, 2018 “You are my Sunshine, my only Sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray…” The family of Eugenia “Jean” Katherine Johnson, of Houston, Texas announce that she left this world early Thursday morning, January 25, 2018 at the age of 84. We were so blessed to have her as mother and grandmother and are so comforted to know that she is now resting peacefully with her Lord. But knowing her, she’s not resting at all! She’s working in the yard, cooking, playing games, going to church, helping others, traveling, and looking forward to the next family party! She leaves a legacy of smiles, laughter and good deeds. She really is our Sunshine! Jean is preceded in death by her beloved husband Leslie G. Johnson who passed away in 1993. Mom always told us that people asked her in the old days why she had so many children and it would really irritate her but that she was sure glad she did and we have to agree! Jean is survived by her six children Pamela Kimmons, Cynthia Elzner & husband Glenn, Janet Wright & husband Terry, Lisa Johnson, Chip Johnson & wife Ann, Melanie Maza & husband Royce; and eight grandchildren that she absolutely adored and who brought her so much pride and joy: Lindsey, Andy & Leslie Kimmons, Samantha Wright, Emily & Brandon Johnson, and Erik & Luke Maza. By the way, she loved her three sons-in-law and was always switching up which one was her favorite on any given day, but she definitely had only one favorite daughter-in-law whom she loved as a daughter, Ann Johnson. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Jean was born the youngest of eight children in Plantersville, TX in 1933 to Daniel and Katherine Wagner, a proud immigrant farming family with a brave pioneer spirit. Since her own mother died when Eugenia was only three months old, she was raised by her father and her older sisters with whom she had a special bond. Her seven older siblings Mike, Verna, Jack, Joe, Barbara, Maggie, and Dan preceded her in death. Jean graduated from Montgomery High School and moved from Plantersville to Galveston, Texas and began her work in the nursing field. She met her husband Leslie G. Johnson and they were married at St. Mary Cathedral in Galveston, Texas in 1954. Later they moved to The Heights and finally settled in their home in Spring Branch where they would raise their six children and where Jean would live the rest of her life. Jean led her life devoted to her family and God. She was a founding member of St. Jerome Catholic Church and School in 1962. She later completed her nursing career serving as the School Nurse for St. Jerome School for many years. She volunteered and mentored in many other organizations in the Spring Branch Community. Jean always had a joyful smile and a heart for caring for others. Jean lived with Alzheimer’s disease for several years and while this terrible disease can ravage the body and mind, it could never rob her of her beautiful smile or rob us of the joy of spending time with our mother and our Granny. Thank you to all the Caregivers that supported us through this illness, including daughter Lisa, friends Mary and Lupe, and the kind people of The Cottage of Spring Branch. See you soon, Sunshine! Visitation will be held at Dettling Funeral Home 14094 Memorial Drive Houston, TX 5:30-8:00 PM Thursday evening, February 1, 2018, with all eulogies welcome to begin at 7 PM and ending with the Holy Rosary. The funeral mass will be Friday February 2, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Jerome Church 8825 Kempwood Dr. Houston, TX, followed by a luncheon in the Parish Hall where all are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Jean Johnson’s honor to St. Jerome Catholic School towards a scholarship fund for a needy family.
