Bio

BROWNWOOD - Funeral services for Melba Stone Mize, 67, of Brownwood will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at First Baptist Church of Brownwood. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home. A second visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Melba's goals in life were to be a good wife and mother and a supportive partner in ministry to her husband, Rev. Jimmie Mize. Married on June 30, 1959 in Celina, Texas, Melba and Jimmie served side-by-side in ministry until her death. Despite the challenges and responsibilities of being a pastor's wife, Melba remained committed to her important role as a homemaker and Christian example to her sons, Jeff, Bryan and Kyle. Melba and Jimmie's ministry together began at Northside Baptist Church in Victoria, where they served for 30 years. During this time, Melba took leadership roles in Sunday school, outreach, visitation and benevolence and missions ministries. Following their retirement from Northside, Melba and Jimmie served together through his consulting work with Cargill and Associates of Fort Worth. Jimmie's work with Cargill took them to Brownwood, where he served three years as a development consultant with Howard Payne University. They have maintained a home in Brownwood. After working 15 years with Cargill, Melba and Jimmie returned to pastoral ministry, where he has served as an interim pastor. He currently serves at Salt Creek Baptist Church in Brownwood, where Melba was a popular teacher for an adult Sunday school class. Jimmie also serves as development director at the Heart of Texas Baptist Camp and Conference Center. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Jimmie Mize of Brownwood; three sons, Jeff Mize and his wife, Anna, of Allen; Bryan Mize and his wife, Kristi, of Waco; and Kyle Mize and his wife, Julie, of Brownwood; and four grandchildren, Juliana, Aaron, Elizabeth and Brandon. Born on April 24, 1939 to Ben and Flora Stone of Celina, Texas, Melba was the second youngest of seven children. She was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the worship seating fund at Salt Creek Baptist Church, the media ministry at First Baptist Church in Brownwood, Heart of Texas Baptist Camp or charity of choice.
