Son of Louis & Stella (Smith) Weidner. Married to Dorothy Jean Price. From the Grand Island, NE. Independent Newspaper: An elderly Broken Bow couple died Monday after their car hit a train on the city's east side. Merlon Weidner, 82, was driving south on Memorial Drive at the intersection of Highways 2 and 70 just before 10 a.m. Monday when his car crossed a median and hit an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train. His wife, Dorothy Weidner, 80, was a passenger. Both victims died later Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, said Dan Spanel, Custer County's chief sheriff's deputy. Mr. Weidner died early Monday afternoon, and Mrs. Weidner died Monday night. Witnesses estimated the vehicle's speed at about 60 mph when it hit the train, Spanel said. Neither victim was wearing a seat belt. The Weidners were initially taken via ambulance to the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow before they were transported to Kearney by helicopter. Spanel said the cause of the accident has not been determined.
