Bio

The Salt Lake Tribune October 22, 2003 page B6 Robert L. James, PhD 1926 ~ 2003 MIDVALE - Dr. Robert L. James, 77, passed away on October 16, 2003 after a long illness. He was born May 11, 1926 to Archie and Belle Bird James in Union, Utah. He married the former Joan D. Lillie of Salt Lake City on May 9, 1952. Dr. James enlisted in the US Navy on 13 March 1944, and immediately entered active duty after graduation from Jordan High School in May of 1944. He was discharged on 2 July, 1946 as a Pharmacist Mate 2/c. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Utah where he received his BS and MS Degrees in Psychology. Dr. James also studied at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland during the academic year 1950-51. After working several years at the Master's level in the States of North Dakota and Montana, he enrolled at the Univ. of North Dakota where he received his Doctorate in June, 1962. In 1963, Dr. James was offered an appointment with the Harvard Medical School, Dept. of Psychiatry, first as a Research Associate and then as an Assistant Professor. He likewise held a Lectureship appointment in the Dept. of Social Relations, Harvard College from 1965-1970. During this same time frame, he performed contract work for the National Security Agency. In 1970, he was asked to take the position of Chief Psychologist at NSA. He worked for the Agency as a Psychologist and Senior Executive for 20 years, retiring in June, 1990. The last two years of his service were spent in Germany from where he served as NSA's Mental Health Officer for Western Europe. Dr. James was a member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge #2, F & A.M. for over 52 years. He spent his adult life concerned for the welfare of others. But, first and foremost he considered himself devoted to his family. He was consistent in his love and in showing us what was good and right. The family feels fortunate to have had a father who was such a good and caring man. Knowing he was not well, Dr. James returned home to his beloved Wasatch Mountains in Jan., 1998. He began treatment with the Univ. of Utah Hospitals and Clinics followed by intensive treatment at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Our father was very grateful for the thoughtful service and caring treatment he received throughout the system. He is survived by three children; Mark O. (Choon) James, Laie, HI; Janet L. Grey, Midvale; and Jeri L. (Don) Pierce, Taylorsville; six grandsons, Robert K. (Sanae) James, Provo; Mark L. James, Jeremy K. James, Daniel C. James, Laie, HI; James D.
