From The Wolbach Messenger, September 6, 1973, transcribed by Linda Berney: Lydia Paula Russell, daughter of Louis and Rose Suchanek Bartunek, was born May 27, 1903 in Howard County near Wolbach. She received her education at Wolbach and graduated from high school in 1921. She then attended Midland College at Fremont. She taught school in Wolbach and Ericson until her marriage to Clarence O. SMITH. They resided in Grand Island until his death in 1955. On June 22, 1957 she was united in marriage to Verne W. RUSSELL at Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and the Andrew Chapter 41, Order of Eastern Star, both of Grand Island. She passed from this life on Friday, August 31st at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul at the age of 70 years. Surviving are her husband, Verne; two daughters, Mrs. Lohene Gadek of Edison, New Jersey and Mrs. JoAnn Hempel of Littleton, Colorado; one son, James L. Smith of Columbia, Maryland; three step-daughters, Mrs. Helen Cammarano of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Marianne Murray of Omaha and Mrs. Peggy Stoppkotte of Grand Island; one sister, Mrs. Hilda Berggren of St. Paul; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
