Bio

James C. Butler, 80, of Spring Valley, passed away early on Friday, March 9, 2007, at a Temple hospital. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 11, at Connally Compton Funeral Directors, Waco. Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, March 12, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Gray officiating. Burial will be at Waco Memorial Park. James was born in Eddy, Texas, to the late Clem Bazil and Susan Fronie (Hargrove) Butler. At 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and sailed on the U.S.S. Mendicino, serving in Okinawa during the invasion. On Oct. 8, 1950, he married Jo Nell Todd. From the age of 19 to 61, he worked for Universal Atlas LeHigh Portland Cement Co., retiring in 1987. He enjoyed cutting up with and playing pranks on fellow co-workers, as well as playing 42 and dominoes with them on lunch breaks. He and his wife were the first members of First Baptist Church Woodway after the charter closed. His strong Christian leadership was evidenced by his serving as a deacon and also Sunday school teacher of young boys. In his free time, James loved to hunt, fish, garden, farm and spend time with his grandsons. James was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Nell on April 28, 2000; infant twin brother, Charles B. Butler; brother, Eugene Butler; and sister, Edna Gan. Survivors include his son, James Bryan Butler and his wife, Amy, of Bossier City, La.; daughters, Janet Elaine Broach and her husband, Bill, of Lorena, and Beverly Butler Burch and her husband, Jeff, of Bedford, Texas; grandsons: Seth, Colin and Clayton Broach and Alex and Jacob Butler; brother, Tilmon Butler and wife, Merle, of Lorena; sisters, Grenita Crigger and her husband, Bob, and Zerline Scott and her husband, Doug, all of Temple; other relatives and many friends.
