Bio

married Rosa Garza Garcia Jan. 13, 1853 Camargo Mexico. they had 14 children. El Rancho La Gloria/Temple Ranch The history of the ranch dates back to 1868 when Captain Edward Nixon Gray and his wife, Rosa Garza-Garcia Gray, settled and began ranch operations in Duval County. Through a series of land purchases and improvements, the Grays developed one of the largest ranches in South Texas, which was referred to El Rancho La Gloria by locals. Edward Nixon Gray was born in 1826 in Auckland, England and immigrated to Texas with his family by 1836. Gray later was a volunteer in the Republic of Texas and the U.S. and Confederate militaries. He was also a printer, political leader and entrepreneur. Gray met Rosa Garza-Garcia while operating a mercantile business in Concepcion. They married in 1853 and had 14 children. Three of their daughters became schoolteachers and a son was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt to serve as the Postmaster of Laredo. At one time, El Rancho La Gloria was about 40,000 acres and supported thousands of sheep, cattle, oxen and horses. A two-story, 22-room mansion stood on the property. On top of the roof, was a “cupbola” or look-out tower, which was used to watch for Indians. Children of the Grays and the ranch hands’ children attended the school, which was housed inside the mansion. By the 1890s, drought, animal disease and economic depression led to the demise of the ranch as well as other area ranches. Edward Nixon Gray died from influenza in 1897 and was buried on the ranch property. In 1901, Rosa Gray sold the homestead and moved to San Marcos. She died in San Antonio in 1917 and was interred there. (Alice Echo News Journal-Alice TX) Texas State Historical Marker 16001
