Charles Haag was born 22 Dec 1848 in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the youngest of three known children of Vinzenz Haag and Afra Wallum. After his father died, Afra remarried to Dominicus Wilhelm and had two more known children. Charles immigrated to the U.S. about 1868, arriving in New York City. He made his way to Indiana where "Charles Hagg" appeared on the Grant County 1870 census as a 21 year old tailor. The following year, he married his first wife, Leora or Lebinida Baugh. They had four known children while living in Vigo County. They divorced in 1887 and Charles moved to Texas. Charlie may have been drawn to Texas because, by then, his brother Engelbert, mother and step-father and younger half-brother, Lawrence Wilhelm, had immigrated to the area around Austin. He married Veronia Dukatnik in 1887 and they had a family of nine children. The sons from his first marriage changed the spelling of their name to HAGUE after 1900. The younger sons, like Charlie himself, kept the HAAG spelling.
