Bio

Mildred Heibel, 89, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, August 17, 2017, at Brookstone Acres in Columbus. The funeral service will be Saturday, August 26, 10:30 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Aaron Witt officiating with the help of Rev. Cory Burma. Interment will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M. Memorials may be directed to Christ Lutheran School. Mildred Heibel was born Oct. 1, 1927, in rural Platte County, to Theodore and Frieda (Theilen) Janssen. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Columbus. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Elementary School. Although she only attended school until the 8th grade, she later earned her G.E.D., while in her 50’s, through classes at the Columbus Public Library. On June 9, 1946, Mildred married Arthur J. “Bud” Heibel at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They were married for 60 years until Bud’s passing in 2006. They farmed together north of Columbus for many years. Mildred also worked at Becton-Dickenson, Dale Electronics, and most notably, J.C. Penney, where she retired as a sales clerk after 30 years of working in various departments throughout the store. She was an active member at Christ Lutheran Church participating in various organizations including the church choir, altar guild, ladies aid, and Lutheran Laymen’s League. She later attended Peace Lutheran Church for the final years of her life. Mildred’s strong faith and love for the Lord were very important to her. Mildred’s life revolved around one thing: Her family. She enjoyed music (especially polkas), baking, and a simple way of life. As a child she spoke German, and she continued to speak German with her sisters throughout their lives. She was a helpful, friendly neighbor who made many lasting relationships throughout her lifetime. Survivors include: Sons: Arthur "Ted" (Sherryl) Heibel III of Columbus, NE Randy (Sharon) Heibel of Columbus, NE Jon (Elissa) Heibel of Columbus;, NE Daughters: Jean Heibel of Columbus, NE Susan (Tom) Blahak of Longmont, CO Grandchildren: Amy Estes, Art Heibel IV, Greg Heibel, Aaron Blahak, Joshua Heibel, James Heibel, Jason Heibel, Steven Heibel, and Cara Heibel Great-grandchildren: HaiLee Heibel, Clayton Heibel, Joshlynn Heibel, Heidi Heibel, Emma Heibel, Temple Bryant, Natalie Higginbotham, Kaitlyn Heibel, and Kolton Heibel Many nieces and nephews Mildred was preceded in death by: Parents: Theodore and Frieda Janssen Brother: Ernie Janssen Sisters: Elise Anderson, Johanna Klink, Leona Eisenmann, and Olga Borland
