Jim was born on Aug. 18, 1943, in Grand Island, son of Roy and Elsie (Luth) Lilienthal. Jim is survived by his children, Robert Lilienthal of Oklahoma and Jennifer Lilienthal of Grand Island; a brother, Michael (Julie) Lilienthal of Grand Island; a sister, Colleen “Connie” Carey of Grand Island; grandchildren, Chase, Jessica, Brittany, and Madison Lilienthal of Oklahoma, Alyssa, Riley, and Marissa Lilienthal of Grand Island; nieces and nephews, Kaleb Lilienthal, Kelsey (Broderick) Helgoth, Cheyenne Hillman, Skye Hillman, Bill (Kristi) Carey and Rebecca Carey; along with numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, Richard “Dick” Lilienthal. As a longtime Grand Island resident, Jim was raised south of Grand Island on the family farm. Growing up, he helped his father and brother with the milking and day-to-day farm chores. In 1961, he graduated from Grand Island High School. In his early 20s, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1964 until 1968. During his time in the service, he met Mary Jane Gardener while in Oklahoma. The couple was later married and settled in Oklahoma. After Mary Jane passed away, Jim returned to his roots and began farming again on the land he grew up on. He was employed by Cargill and Frito-Lay until he began employment as a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office for the next 20 years. Jim was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, and the Platt Duetsche. He enjoyed playing pitch and keno, and when he was younger, he also enjoyed fishing. He loved to play pool and enjoyed his evening coffee at Tommy’s sitting at the bar watching the TV. Jim appreciated the company of just a few close friends over a crowd.
