Bio

Gary Dean Vollmer, 67 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska (formerly of Oxford, Nebraska) passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017 at the CHI Health – Good Samaritan in Kearney. Gary was born November 28, 1949 at Lexington, Nebraska, the youngest of four children born to Alfred Ross and Thelma Geraldine (Grant) Vollmer. Gary received his primary education from Dawson County District #21 north of Overton through the eighth grade, and then graduated from Overton High School with the class of 1968. During his high schools years he enjoyed basketball and football. At a young age, Gary loved horses, and working with livestock. Following his education, he was inducted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Gary served his country from December 1969 until returning home from the war, and his honorable discharge on July 31, 1971. After his service, Gary returned home to Phelps County, and was employed as a carpenter. In the years to come, Gary was employed as a truck driver, and by various Hay Mills in the area, and later in years at the Carter Feedlot and then McClymont Feedyard. Gary was united in marriage to Mary Lauby and to this union one daughter, Tera was born. This marriage later ended in divorce. On November 28, 1992, he was united in marriage to Dawn Haag and to this union two daughters were born: Jacinda and Gabrielle. The family made their home at Oxford. As a family they enjoyed attending area rodeos, and the girls remember well that Dad was always on the hunt for his next automobile. Simply driving around the country side was where he was most content. He was a member of the Oxford American Legion Post #219. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Marilyn Klein. He leaves to celebrate his life; his three daughters: Tera Deprez of Bay City, Michigan; and Jacinda and Gabrielle Vollmer both of Oxford; one grandson, Harbor Weber of Bay City, Michigan; two sisters: Donna Boggs and her husband, Frank, and Marsha Samuelson all of Bertrand; brother-in-law, Tom Klein of Walden, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. There will be no visitation, the family is honoring his wish for cremation. Private family graveside services and inurnment for Gary D. Vollmer will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Wes Hafner, officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the U.S. Army Military Honors Team. The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of the arrangements.
