Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent August 19, 1987 Robert L. Lewandowski, 85, of ..., died Monday, Aug. 17, at a local nursing home. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be ... at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Mr. Lewandowski was born June 5, 1902, at Ashton to Michael and Rozalia Klonowski Lewandowski. He grew up and received his education at the Ashton Catholic School. He married Gertrude Gappa on April 29, 1929, at Loup City. After their marriage the couple farmed north of Ashton, later moving to Loup City and then to Grand Island. While in Grand Island he joined the fire department and was a fireman until his retirement in 1967. He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus, of which he was a 4th degree member; and the Platt-Deutsche. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; a son, Ron of Grand Island; three daughters, Mrs. Roland (Dorothy) Smith and Mrs. Robert (Jean) Woestman, both of Grand Island and Mrs. Bill (Mary) Ries of Hastings; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Zaglinski of Washington and Eleanor Skibinski of Grand Island. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
