Bio

Jim Clay Harris, 83, passed away Monday, July 10, 2017 in Muskogee. He was born September 9, 1933 in Morris, OK to Myrtle (Hardin) and George Harris. Jim was raised in Council Hill and Erim, OK. At 14 years old, Jim joined the Army and served 5 months before his Mom brought him back home. In 1951, he rejoined the Army and served in Germany for 3 years. After returning home a second time, he went to work in the oil field. In 1959, he married Bonnie Tompkins of Pauls Valley, OK. After working for several years in the oil fields of Oklahoma and Texas, Jim took his family on an adventure around the world to Tripoli, Libya and Singapore from 1971-1977. He retired from Welex in 1985, after 24 years, and moved to Perry, OK. He then drove a truck for J.B. Hunt for 16 years and received his million mile accident free award. For health reasons, he retired in 2003 and moved to Longtown, OK. In 2005, Jim and Bonnie moved to Muskogee where Jim attended First Baptist Church and enjoyed bowling until his health no longer permitted. Music was always a big part of Jim’s life from the time he was a child. He could play guitar and piano by ear and he and his brother and sister were always entertaining the family. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alma Carrick, Thelma White, Joyce Frazier, Louise Self; brother, Lee Harris; granddaughter, Amanda Harris and 2 great granddaughters. His beloved Buster the beagle also proceeded him in death. A graveside service will be held July 22, 2017 at Council Hill Cemetery, Council Hill, OK.
