Bio

Rolly Glause, 86, of Broken Bow died Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Broken Bow Care and Rehabilitation. Roland "Rolly'' William Glause was born on Nov. 1, 1930 in the family home near Halsey to Paul and Genevieve Glause. At the time of his birth, he joined two siblings, Mahala and Lois. Later six more siblings, Charlene, Paul, Margaret, Van, Judy and Linda joined the family. Rolly grew up in the Sandhills in Nebraska and lived in this area his entire life. He enjoyed working with his dad on the ranch and loved the animals he took care of which included saddle horses, work horses, mules, pigs and cattle. During his childhood, he developed a work ethic that prepared him for his career of working on ranches and training horses. His work career began at the early age of 16 when he went to work for Glenn Nutter. Rolly and Glenn became the best of friends and Glenn taught Rally many of the skills that enabled him to be successful. Glenn and Rolly also competed in rodeos together throughout the years. Rolly showed a natural ability for roping, riding broncs, steer wrestling and racing horses after the rodeos were over. He loved all aspects of the rodeo life. During the time of the Korean War, Rolly enlisted in the Arny and served for two years. He was stationed in Germany where he remained until he returned back home. After returning home, Rolly married Dorothy Matthauser of Dunning. They spent their married life living and working on various ranches in the Sandhills. Rolly continued to compete in rodeos and became a very popular and successful contestant winning events in all of his areas of expertise. It was difficult to beat him when he was roping as he was "one of the best"! During these years, he became the cowboy hero of many. Rolly and Dorothy were married for 30 years and then divorced. In 1988, Rolly married Lorraine Saner Downing and they moved to Broken Bow. At this time, he began working at Adams Land and Cattle Company and was a valued employee there for many years. He also worked at the sale barn in Broken Bow and repaired boots and saddles. His hobbies included training horses, mentoring people who wanted to learn rodeo skills, reading western books, and enjoying his Siamese cats. He loved being with his family and also showed an interest in what his nieces and nephews and other family members were doing. During his work and rodeo career, Rolly received many awards and honors, He was nominated by his friend, Renee Ferguson, for the Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in July of 2011. This was an honor that he was very deserving of and he was proud of this accomplishment. In later years, Rolly's health began to decline and he entered the nursing home in April, 2015. He never complained and made the best of living there. He continued as much as possible, his cowboy way of life and was always dressed in his Wranglers, western shirt, belt with big shiny buckle, western hat and polished cowboy boots. Rolly was admired and loved by his family and many friends. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 7, 2017 in Broken Bow. He leaves to mourn his passing, two brothers, Paul Glause of OshKosh, and Van Glause of Denver, Colo., and one sister, Linda Haumont of Broken Bow. He is also survived by his step daughters, Carol Fenske of Sargent, Cindy Coffman of Dunning, Janet Jacobsen of Geneva and Judy Mulligan of Valentine and numerous nieces, nephews and step grandchildren. Rolly was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, his parents and five sisters. Funeral services were Thursday July 20, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Pastor Doug Saner officiating. Burial was at the Merna Cemetery with Military Honors.
