BRAINARD – Caroline "Carrie" Spatz, 95, of Brainard, died July 9, 2017 at David Place in David City. Caroline was born on the family farm between Abie and Linwood, on April 25, 1922, to James and Mary (Reznicek) Eckstein. She attended District 80 until eighth grade and went to Linwood High School for two years and then on to Schuyler High School to take "normal training" to become a teacher. She taught at District 10 by Linwood, District 46 by Bruno, District 17 by Valparaiso and District 17 by Appleton. On Jan. 22, 1947, she married Emil Spatz at Sacred Heart Church, at Cedar Hill. Shortly after marriage, they moved to a farm west of Brainard, where four children were born to this union. She lived on the farm until 2015, when she moved to David Place in David City. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, the Guild and PCCW. She was a long time member of the Brainard American Legion Auxiliary. Carrie is survived by her children, Mary Anne (John) Juricek of Denton; John (Keverne) Spatz and Kenny (Margie) Spatz, both of Brainard; and Carol (Byron) Nienhueser of Beaver Crossing; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margie Ratkovec; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil in 2011; one grandson, Christopher Juricek; brother, Ernest (Anna) Eckstein; sister, Marie (Victor) Polacek; and many in-laws. Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 13 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard. A parish rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 14 at the church. Burial will be at the new Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be given for Masses or in care of the family. Chermok Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
