One by one the old pioneers are dropping off. The last to go is to(sic) Elias Walker, who died at his home in Jamaica at about 7 o'clock this morning. Mr. Walker came to Jamaica in the fall of 1865 and bought out the claim and business of John Cadman who was then running a post office there. the old man has resided in the same place for twenty three years past. . . . Taken from obituary of Elias Walker, Nebraska State Journal, 6 Sept, 1888; page 7, column 5: Died September 5, 1888, at his home near Jamaica. One of the oldest residents of Lancaster County, coming here in 1863. At one time postmaster and owner of a stage line, and was one of the prominent men of the territory. Kearney County Democrat, Minden, Nebraska · Tuesday, September 18, 1888 pg 2 OVER THE STATE. . . . Elias Walker, an old resident of Jamaica, died on Wednesday last. The deceased was born in Ohio in 1818. Mr. Walker was one of the oldest settlers in that section, having moved there in 1867. On account of his sterling honesty, his just and generons(sic) character, he left many warm friends who will deeply mourn his loss. After the death of Elias, his son-in-law, Winfield S. Baker was appointed administrator of the estate. (Note: Winfield was a step-grandson)
